You need a valid, government-issued ID with your photo. In Colorado, the ID cannot be expired by more than one year. Seniors whose ID is expired by more than a year may need a Credible Witness. Bring all pages of the document(s) you need notarized. Contact your notary before the appointment with concerns about ID.

The notary provides a defense against fraud by making a reasonable assessment of the signer's awareness of the document. If needed, the signer may be asked to swear an oath/affirmation about the truthfulness of information in the document. However, unless the notary is an attorney, it is not appropriate for the notary to determine if the document is legal, truthful, or correct.
